BEHIND THE SCENES: STORIE ABOUT THE GUESTHOUSE, RENOVATIONS AND WHO RUN IT
Joli Guesthouse was the vision of its founder, Joana, a Portuguese woman who spent her childhood and teenage years in Mozambique, from the age of 7 to 18. Upon turning 18, Joana moved to Europe to study law and begin her career. However, it didn’t take long for her to realize that her true passion lay in fine living and hospitality. She went on to graduate in Tourism and earned a Master’s in Marketing and Management of Touristic and Luxury Companies in Barcelona. After spending 17 years in the hospitality industry, Joana returned to Mozambique to establish her first business.
With remarkable foresight, she transformed a modest five-bedroom house into the luxurious 10-room guesthouse that Joli Guesthouse is today, complete with inviting common areas. Joana’s refined taste and her dedication to staying up-to-date with the latest interior design trends—a skill honed during her decade-long career as an international hotel inspector—greatly influenced her work.
Joli Guesthouse was designed in the Tropical Chic style. The “Tropical” element is evident in its use of straw and wood textures, lush greenery, and botanical wallpapers. The “Chic” aspect is highlighted by vintage pieces adorned with golden accents, along with mirrors of varying shapes and sizes. Pastel and muted tones dominate the decor, offering guests a sense of comfort and serenity.
The journey to transforming the property was not without its challenges. Joana took on the refurbishment with no prior experience in construction, decoration, or interior design—leaving her with constant concerns about the project’s outcome. Despite these obstacles, including struggles with contractors, suppliers, and funding, she persisted. From overhauling the water distribution system and replacing the electricity grid to adding new bathrooms, installing wooden floors, creating a garden, furnishing the space, and setting up staff, invoicing systems, and an online presence, Joana managed to complete it all in just eight months.
This remarkable endeavor taught her that resilience is her greatest strength and that having a supportive network is crucial. She believes in surrounding oneself with people who uplift and encourage you.
